SYNDICATED
COLUMNIST TO SPEAK AT ANNUAL LECTURE
COLUMBIA, S.C.- The Buchheit Family Lecture Series presented
by the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at The University of South
Carolina will feature a syndicated columnist from The Washington Post Writers
Group
The event is open to the public and will be held on Nov. 19
at 7 p.m. in the Belk Auditorium at the Darla Moore School of Business.
According to the J-School’s website The Buchheit Family
Lecture Series is funded by an endowment from the Buchheit family of
Spartanburg. The event was created
in 2000 by members of the Buchheit family.
The family created the event to commemorate the late Phil
Buchheit, former publisher of the Spartanburg
Herald Journal and the former president and chairman of Mid-South
Management Company, a family owned company that owns approximately 24 daily and
community newspapers across the southeast. The Buchheit Family Endowment also provides undergraduate
scholarships, graduate fellowships and doctoral fellowships annually to students
in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
The event will feature Kathleen Parker as a guest
speaker. Parker is a syndicated
columnist for The Washington Post Writers Group. According to postwritersgroup.com, her work has been
featured in over 400 newspapers including The Weekly Standard, Time, Town and Country, Cosmopolitan and Fortune Small Businesses. Her book “Save the Males: Why Men
Matter and Why Women Should Care” was published by Random House in 2008. She is also a regular guest on NBC’s
“The Chris Matthews Show.”
“I attended the event last year and heard William Kristol
reflect on the 2008 elections,” said Ashley Webb, sophomore public relations
student at USC. “It was a great
opportunity to hear his analytic perspective on current events, which is what I
am looking forward to this year, hearing Kathleen Parker talk about what drives
her to write such strong opinion pieces.”
